There's a lot of literature on professional ethics and standards, but it's not integrated with the rest. It's specialists in that area. Or we find that this is more from the medical schools, it was very astounding to find that by half of the medical schools which were surveyed, about 26 medical schools which were surveyed in the United States, and of course, everyone's required to take our medical ethics course, but only half required it as part of the requirements to pass the medical degree. ©2018 National Council of State Boards of Nursing, Inc.

Of the top states with the most bill filings, which were Illinois, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New York, Oklahoma, and Texas, each had over 10,000 bills filed. And that trend for the number of bills is going to most likely continue to grow. And however, some legislatures are taking action to limit the number of bills. For example, California has a new rule for the 25 and 26 session, that senators can only file 35 bills total, which is down from 40, and assembly members can also only file 35 bills in total, which is down from 50. So I don't think that'll stop them from trying to hit that number. So when we track across the country, our goal is to find bills and issues that will impact nursing regulation and reveal trends in healthcare policy and occupational licensure.

So, for example, they have fewer cuts, they classify students into basic level, advanced level. What are some other levels? Yeah, so it has different cuts, right? But for our licensure exam, we only have one cut. We only classify students into pass or failed, so we only need one cut. So, this is just from our website. You may know that for RN, our passing standard currently is 0.00 logits. So, as I mentioned in morning's presentation, you'll see the red line, right? That's the cut score, it's zero. And for our PN, currently, it's -0.21 logits. So here, you may say, "Hey, PN standard is lower than RN standard."

It tells them, you know, kind of some information we want them to know and again, pushes them back out to Nursys. If you've not already done it, make sure you enroll and pushes them to get that information themselves. And then, of course, messaging on our website and our renewal portal. So, the workforce questions were also incorporated into Nursys e-Notify. So that was the other big piece that we wanted. So I don't know about most of you, but I think many of us are faced with this horrible nursing shortage and policymakers look to the board of nursing to say, how do we solve this?

Beverly: I found out about the scholar in residence position through the work I’ve been doing with the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). My mentor mentioned the U.S. Nurse Safety Study being proposed at NCSBN, and because of its similarities to my areas of research, I started reviewing the NCSBN website, where I found the position. I thought this would be a wonderful opportunity to take the research I’ve been doing in the world of sleep and health care and tie it to patient care errors. My focus has always been on the individual nurse and how lack of sleep impacts nurse health.
