So to the extent that the State Council and the National Council of State Boards wants to embrace this effort, we really welcome it. ©2023 National Council of State Boards of Nursing, Inc. All rights reserved. 3 I'll just end by saying that, unfortunately, two weeks ago in my congressional district in Eastern Connecticut, a home health nurse lost her life in a home visit for someone who was on a sex offender list. She was alone at the time that she entered the dwelling. And unfortunately, it's an example of where different kinds of practices where she was not going to be alone with a high-risk patient that had been clearly identified, really could have literally meant the difference between life and death.

Unlike educators and supervisors who previously assessed performance based on technical knowledge and ability to follow algorithms and protocols, today’s profession calls for critical thinking that is conducive to clinical reasoning and clinical judgment. continued from page 6 In order to function effectively and efficiently, the nurse must be able to call upon a foundational repertoire of knowledge to plan, implement and evaluate patient care. So, that is a very important piece, actually, of the strategy, is that, how can this system help me? Well, we can develop tools and services, but for that we needed to connect with the members and that's what we did. Around 2006 to 2009 or '10, three or four years, we took the time to go and visit all the members in the country, all the jurisdictions, except for, I think, Guam or American Samoa, we had conference calls with them. They're just too far out for us to visit. So, we had a conversation with every single member. When we visited the members, we actually talked with their staff, we asked them, "What kind of tools do you really need in the system that will allow you to be more efficient?"

There's a lot of literature on professional ethics and standards, but it's not integrated with the rest. It's specialists in that area. Or we find that this is more from the medical schools, it was very astounding to find that by half of the medical schools which were surveyed, about 26 medical schools which were surveyed in the United States, and of course, everyone's required to take our medical ethics course, but only half required it as part of the requirements to pass the medical degree. ©2018 National Council of State Boards of Nursing, Inc.

Of the top states with the most bill filings, which were Illinois, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New York, Oklahoma, and Texas, each had over 10,000 bills filed. And that trend for the number of bills is going to most likely continue to grow. And however, some legislatures are taking action to limit the number of bills. For example, California has a new rule for the 25 and 26 session, that senators can only file 35 bills total, which is down from 40, and assembly members can also only file 35 bills in total, which is down from 50. So I don't think that'll stop them from trying to hit that number. So when we track across the country, our goal is to find bills and issues that will impact nursing regulation and reveal trends in healthcare policy and occupational licensure.

If a NP or prospective NP student in Canada wanted to work in an ICU or critical care setting, with a generalist program cover both primary and acute care competencies for both adults and pediatrics? Michelle, do you want to take this one? >> Things, sure. The new curriculum that will, as of '25 men '26, it is preparing the nurse practitioner for general practice in all practice settings. Even though the family all ages curriculum, you know, is very similar, will be very aligned with the new curriculum, there will need to be some adjustments by the faculties or schools of nursing to give experiences in these different areas.

Ingwerson and Schaffner shared petition forms and processes, and through their collaboration, clarified the “chain of command” for students who needed information or assistance. Their relation ship promoted more consistency in processes. Schaffner also attended a survey visit to a Portland nursing program, which provided her a complete view of the process used for ongoing program approval in Oregon. Ingwerson and Schaffner are currently planning joint stakeholder meetings between the states that specifically address distant learning issues.
