  • Pennsylvania to Fully Implement Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC) July 7, 2025 | NCSBN

    The National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN) is a not-for-profit organization whose purpose is to provide an organization through which boards of nursing act and counsel together on matters of common interest and concern affecting the public health, safety and welfare, including the development of licensing examinations in nursing. On that date, any RN or LPN/VN residing in Pennsylvania who meets all relevant criteria to apply for a multistate license to practice in other NLC member states will be able find more information by visiting the Pennsylvania State Board of Nursing website .  Licensure requirements are aligned in NLC states for those nurses applying for a multistate license. Requirements include submitting to a federal and state fingerprint-based criminal background check, passing the NCLEX Examination, and holding an active and unencumbered license.

    Guidance from an organizational consultant will be useful in forming a permanent structure that will endure and support the work that needs to continue. The new structure will support fair decision-making among all relevant stakeholders. In addition, the new structure will be in place as soon as possible. The LACE organizational structure should include representation of: • State licensing boards, including at least one compact and one non-compact state; • Accrediting bodies that accredit education programs of the four APRN roles; • Certifying bodies that offer APRN certification used for regulatory purposes; and, • Education organizations that set standards for APRN education.

    And I'm wondering, what strategies might you use to, kind of, give educators kind of a heads up like you're doing it with regulators and students? - I think if you… You should direct the educators. Let me back up. I visited... I spoke at 14 different educational events last year. Myself personally. And I will keep that up because it excites me, but I will also die eventually and that's probably not a good idea either. My wife really wouldn't like that. However, the other thing that we've done is… And I will tell you this. So that will continue to happen. We are trying to plan an ability to bring other people on to give those presentations.

Key points for nurses residing in Vermont:   Beginning on Feb. 1, 2022, nurses residing in Vermont who currently hold a Vermont RN or LPN/VN license may be eligible for a multistate specialty license.  The multistate license specialty application is now available on the  Vermont Board of Nursing website. It is not necessary for Vermont residents to wait until the next renewal period to apply for the multistate license. New graduates of nursing programs who are Vermont residents may apply for licensure by exam on the Vermont Board of Nursing website and can select the multistate license option.

    If candidates have any questions or concerns about their registration, they can reach Pearson VUE via phone or email. A live chat option on the Pearson VUE website is also available in many parts of the world. Once the NRB has all of the required forms and fees and determines that the candidate is eligible to test, they will receive their authorization to test or ATT. The ATT includes the period when a candidate is granted to take the NCLEX and allows them to schedule their appointment.
