• Tolerance refers to how the body adapts to opioids so that increasing amounts may be needed to have the same effects. Tolerance occurs because the opioid receptors on the surface of cells become desensitized and because the cells start to produce fewer receptors. “The bad news is that I need more opioids to get pain relief. The good news is I am less sleepy on my medication.” 10 2. WHAT ARE OPIOID TOLERANCE AND WITHDRAWAL? Withdrawal is a series of symptoms experienced by people who have been taking opioids in a sufficient dose and duration (usually about 60 mg of morphine or equivalent for a week) and then quickly cut back or stop.

Additionally, an integrative literature review was completed. A panel of experts, including representatives from the American Association of Colleges of Nursing, the National League for Nursing and the Organization for Associate Degree Nursing, convened to establish evidence-based regulatory guidelines and quality indicators for nursing education programs. The Texas Board of Nursing uses the NCSBN quality indicators to assess their nursing programs, either during a review of a self-study report or a survey visit.
