    For an intensivist, I would say we must stop the bleeding, but simultaneously building sustainable systems and capabilities to prepare for the long term. Our short-term emergency strategy includes billions of dollars in grants, support for data systems to track fatal and non-fatal overdoses to enable intervention, providing guidance to reduce unnecessary opioid prescribing while supporting the use of non-addictive pain therapies in their further development. Just last month, I joined President Trump and Secretary Azar as we announced an additional $1.8 billion in grants to directly support all 50 states and U.S. territories.
