    For about four years or so, we kept putting in our bill, saying, you know, "It's a great bill. It'll be super. It'll fix all the APRN problems and stuff." And they would come back with it's a bad bill. And so, we finally decided to switch gears a little bit and we worked with the Kansas State Board of Nursing, and we put together a non-threatening technical bill to change the APRN, I mean, ARMP to APRN, change our certificate to license and some other things like that to kind of set the groundwork so that we could get those things out of the way. And it was an unopposed bill and it passed, and the legislators at that point finally knew who we were and that we were legit.

    We’d been so siloed as provinces and territories in the past, so we started talking about it—could we find a way to have Alberta RNs recognized in these other places without all the red tape? And we were able to come up with a memorandum of agreement (MOA) with other provinces so that everybody was going to gain from this.” In 2021, CRNA collaborated with the College of Registered Nurses of Saskatchewan (CRNS) to develop the groundbreaking MOA. This enabled both regulators to adopt a common regulatory framework while ensuring that quality of care, accountability and protection of the public were not compromised.

    So, we took the clinical data from this corporate data warehouse that had prescription data for the year that had comorbidities and patient characteristics. And we merged that with what's called SHEP, or the Survey of Health Experience of Patients. This is basically for non-VA folks, HCAHPS or CAHPS for the VA. It's a patient satisfaction survey. But what we got from this survey was, number one, the patient ID. So, we were able to connect it along with the ©2024 National Council of State Boards of Nursing, Inc. All rights reserved. 5 type of provider that was their assigned primary care provider and who they had a visit with, which is why they got that survey for that patient.

    And so they taught them things like, what is the difference between social distancing and not social distancing? Can't say it's six feet, but you can say, "Hey, if that door on the wall were to lay flat, it's that far apart. Try to stay that far apart. Wash your hands." And the videos go on. "This is, you can't go visit someone who's sick, but you can take them food, you can take them a card, you can visit them." So they helped them understand. They had already internalized the problem. They understood that something bad was happening, gave them action. This is kids.
