The practical/vocational nurse uses a clinical problem-solving process (the nursing process) to collect and organize relevant health care data, assist in the identification of the health needs/problems throughout the client’s life span and contribute to the interdisciplinary team in a variety of settings. The entry-level practical/vocational nurse demonstrates the essential competencies needed to care for clients with commonly occurring health problems that have predictable outcomes. “Professional behaviors, within the scope of nursing practice for a practical/vocational nurse, are characterized by adherence to standards of care, accountability of one’s own actions and behaviors, and use of legal and ethical principles in nursing practice” (NAPNES, 2007).

What might that look like? - I think when we look at, again, the numbers, we have to make sure that we are using this precious resource of registered nurses really well and looking at how can we relieve them of some of the work that they have been responsible for but really doesn't require the registered nurse. These are issues that many governments in the higher income countries are tackling. So on the health care side, this means we need to have inter-professional multidisciplinary teams. And you know that the education system is not preparing the workers for that. And importantly, and this is something our Nordic colleagues: Norway, Sweden, have banged us many times. They said, "You cannot forget and treat patients as a separate entity. Patients are a part of the team." It's a huge sea change when you make them an equal partner, as part of the team.
