An update was provided to the Board regarding the proposed outcome study of Excelsior graduates. G.16. Discuss NCSBN – NLCA Relationship The Board reviewed and discussed the intent and possible outcome of the May 26-27, 2009 meeting with the NLCA Executive Committee. The Board agrees that the ultimate goal is to support a unified organization and effective implementation of the two licensure models. The Board believes it is important to ensure collaboration and cooperation.

    In 2010, the Carnegie study of nursing education (Benner, Sutphen, Leonard, & Day, 2010), which compared and evaluated nine nursing programs with excellent reputations for teaching and learning, studied the state of nursing education. Of Benner et al.’s (2010) 26 transformative recommendations, four of them support nurses advancing their education. They also made a strong case for increasing the rigor of nursing education, and integrating clinical cases and practical experiences throughout the educational process.

The site coordinators provided data on the organization’s ownership and control, staffing, rotation of students through the agency, de- scription of the current transition program, numbers of patients served, and retention data on the new nurses hired between April 1, 2012, and October 31, 2012.
