    The first Compact implemented in 2000 had 25 member states, but membership stalled. We realized there was a need to convene all states to determine a new path forward. After numerous meetings, the original Compact was revised, and a new enhanced Compact was implemented in 2018 which included the requirement for federal criminal background checks. This was a major improvement and 16 more states/territories have now joined the Compact for a total of 41 to date.

    If I do not have a multistate license, but reside in an NLC state which is my PSOR, how do I get a multistate license? Contact your state board of nursing for instructions on the steps you need to take to convert your license to a multistate license. A nurse has 60 days to apply for a license by endorsement, beginning when the nurse physically relocates to the new state with an intent to establish their primary residence in the new state.
