An Explanation of NCSBN’s Authority and Discipline Regarding Licensed Nurses NCSBN has recently received complaints about nurses or people representing themselves as nurses making offensive, and in some cases, racist statements. NCSBN is the vehicle through which nursing regulatory bodies, including boards of nursing (BONs), act and counsel together on matters of common interest and concern affecting public health, safety and welfare.

If a violation is found, Boards of Nursing may impose disciplinary actions, such as reprimands, fines, license suspension, probation, or revocation, depending on the severity of the violation. The general standard for this action is clear and convincing evidence that continued practice by the nurse would present a danger of immediate and serious harm to the public. This action may be revised after the full investigation. Disciplinary Actions The language used to describe the types of disciplinary actions available to BONs varies according to state law.
