When the test taker correctly responds, their ability estimate goes up and they see a more difficult question. When the test taker responds incorrectly, their ability estimate goes down and they see an easier question. As the candidate responds to more and more questions, the uncertainty continues to shrink and the ability estimate becomes much more precise.
