Then what we have on top of that is this S-shaped curve. This is called an item characteristic curve, and every item has its own unique curve, depending on its unique difficulty value. And from the interaction of the person's ability and the item characteristic curve, this function allows us to estimate what the probability of getting the item correct would be for any one of these ability levels.
