    After each review, appro- priate modifications were made. User testing was then conducted, in which the set of prototype items was adminis- tered to a small sample of examinees representative of the target examinee population. User testing was conducted in 3 iterative stages. The first iteration in- cluded 2 students from a bachelor’s degree program, the second included 1 student from a bachelor’s program, and the third included 3 students from an associate’s degree program. An area that warrants monitoring is the proportion of nurses in the workforce who are working past typical retirement age.     A model Nurse Practice Act to facilitate the creation of safe and consistent state laws and parameters to protect both patients and nurses was designed and published. In just five years, NCSBN evolved into a self-sustaining organization, innovating and conducting examinations, publishing position papers on continued competence, and gathering national data on registered nurses, licensed practical nurses, and licensed vocational nurses.

The examination comprises four sections covering the different language skills (listening, reading, writing, and speaking) and takes approximately 2¾ hours to complete.
