“The NCSBN CRE Grant Program is the only grant program in the U.S. that focuses on advancing the science of nursing policy and regulation,” says Maryann Alexander, PhD, RN, FAAN, NCSBN chief officer of Nursing Regulation and director of the CRE Grant Program. NCSBN’s website lists a number of research priorities potential applicants may consider. Additional factors that may go into consideration include NCSBN’s current strategic initiatives; the expressed needs of NCSBN members, including evidence that may support policy objectives; and known gaps in research literature.

From 1999 to 2016, there was an overall 24% increase in suicide rates, and as you can see on this slide not necessarily evenly distributed across all different states. Now, you know, suicide and opioids you may have seen, have tracked together. And while it's difficult to really study accurately, there is an estimate now that about 20% to 30% of opioid-related overdose deaths are likely suicides. Most people who die of an opioid-related overdose death don't necessarily leave a suicide note, but of those suicides where there is actual documentation that this is a suicide attempt, that the proportion of those suicides that involve overdoses has doubled between 1999 and 2014.
