Associate degree nursing education was my primary employment and I was recruited to assist with the on-site approval visits to nursing education programs in our state. I will never forget the By: Gloria Damgaard, MS, RN Executive Director, South Dakota Board of Nursing Winter 2014 | 54 | In Focus Pathways to Leadership 6 | In Focus Winter 2014 | 7 first visit that I made with a team of board members and staff. The lead site visitor informed me that I was allowed one visit to orient to the process and after that I was expected to be a fully functioning member of the team and participate accordingly. I took that to heart realizing that it wasn’t enough to just land on the team, I knew I had to perform and do the job as well.

You know, that's one of the reasons behind the logic of going to field every two years ©2023 National Council of State Boards of Nursing, Inc. All rights reserved. 7 rather than every four, which was historically done by HRSA. We really feel as though, in particular, with flash points and inflection points, like the pandemic, it's going to change rapidly. So that's one of the reasons why we'll be back in field for 2024. So we'll do that plug again for the executive officers. But it is one of those issues where we're trying to understand, you know, really what are all the inputs on this.

Among female nurses, the risk of death by suicide was nearly twice the risk observed in the general population, and 70% more likely than female physicians (Davis, et. al, 2021). The most recent study published September 2023 in JAMA looked at “a nationally representative group of more than 1.8 million adults ages 26 and older in data that spanned from 2008 through 2019” and found that an “analysis of the data showed that health care support workers, registered nurses and health technicians were more likely than non- health care workers to die by suicide. Meanwhile, doctor suicide rates were roughly the same as those in the general population” (Olfson, et. al, 2023).

Our psychometricians refer to this as dichotomist scoring. On the NGN, as you saw in the video that was presented at the mid-year meeting, we are proposing a different approach to scoring clinical judgment content. Here, a candidate will be able to earn some points for responses that are partly correct. For example, if an item has 3 points, each worth a point, a candidate might earn a 0, 1, 2, or 3, depending on their response. Unlike dichotomist scoring, there are many ways to assign partial credit. As we walk through the three methods we proposed for NGN, please remember the big picture.
