    When we talk about DIF, we always compare two groups, reference group versus focal group. Reference group is usually traditional demographic group for NCLEX such as females, white, or U.S. Reference group needs to compare to the focal group. In NCLEX, focal group is males or non-white. Remember, DIF is always comparing two groups, reference group versus focal group. Here is a graphic representation of DIF. DIF is always comparing two groups of people. In this example, we compare females and males. Female is a reference group and male is the focal group.
