The reference group versus the focal group. The reference group is usually the dominating and or traditional demographic group for a testing program. In the REx-PN context, the reference groups are female, white or candidates taking the English exam, while the focal groups are male, non-white or candidates taking the French exam. As such, we are comparing candidate performers on any item across all possible combinations between one reference group and one focal group. Here is a graphic representation of DIF. In this example, we compare females and males performers on a set of items.
