Say an RN who specializes in the treatment of children with cystic fibrosis engages in a friendship with the parent of one of her young patients. The friendship develops into a sexual relationship. Or an LPN who does home care returns to the home of a former patient ostensibly for a social visit, only to be found by a family member to be stealing the patient's opioid medication. Nurses like these know they are supposed to adhere to professional ethical principles like doing good or avoiding causing harm. Or they are supposed to demonstrate professional virtues, such as trustworthiness and honesty.

- We've been using Proctorio, added work from faculty perspective because we do require faculty to review all of the videos whether or not the program has flagged them. If we see something, we have a one-on-one with the student and we discuss anything we've seen. The CNS program, we haven't detected anything except for one student received a phone call during the visit and she immediately picked up her phone and called the faculty and she goes, "I made a mistake and I answered my phone." So they were very upfront about it. - Thank you. Our next question is specifically to Charlie but I would be interested in other's insights on this as well.

There's a lot of literature on professional ethics and standards, but it's not integrated with the rest. It's specialists in that area. Or we find that this is more from the medical schools, it was very astounding to find that by half of the medical schools which were surveyed, about 26 medical schools which were surveyed in the United States, and of course, everyone's required to take our medical ethics course, but only half required it as part of the requirements to pass the medical degree. ©2018 National Council of State Boards of Nursing, Inc.

Of the top states with the most bill filings, which were Illinois, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New York, Oklahoma, and Texas, each had over 10,000 bills filed. And that trend for the number of bills is going to most likely continue to grow. And however, some legislatures are taking action to limit the number of bills. For example, California has a new rule for the 25 and 26 session, that senators can only file 35 bills total, which is down from 40, and assembly members can also only file 35 bills in total, which is down from 50. So I don't think that'll stop them from trying to hit that number. So when we track across the country, our goal is to find bills and issues that will impact nursing regulation and reveal trends in healthcare policy and occupational licensure.

And that's a good thing because then there's less likelihood to overdose deaths. And in states with robust medical marijuana programs, they found that there is a drop in opioid overdoses. I'll just rattle off the... I didn't mean to get too far into this area but just the points about the opioid crisis, because we put out a report on this as well. Randomized controlled trials have shown that cannabis oil, whether CBD-rich, THC-rich, or a combination, can be an effective treatment for chronic neuropathic pain. ©2019 National Council of State Boards of Nursing, Inc.

Event 2024 Discipline Case Management Conference More info: https://www.ncsbn.org/past-event/2024-dcm-conference Presenter Fred Knight, JD, NLC Consultant - [Fred] What I'm going to talk to you a little bit today about, and thank you, Tim, for the introduction, I'm just going to walk you through some areas of the interstate compact of where we see some issues, we see some problems. We obviously are not going to cover the entire compact. We're not going to go through all the ULRs. But we will try to hit some high points. One thing I want to note, if you have any questions about anything I'm talking about, let's go ahead and address them when they come up, when you have the question. I'm fine with that. The end of my session, there's probably four or five scenarios.

So what we mean is the ability entering our programs are about 5% to 7% less than what they were before. The problem with that argument, though, is that our expectation of client care and safety didn't change, just that ability at levels less, right? So we've already seen that drop, Lynn. So the point is we've seen that. Now, I will also say two points do not make a trend. However, I will say last 12 months, we saw this bottom out. So, we saw no more drop and the pass rates have stabled out for one 12-month period. Again, does not make a trend. We have another to follow, then we're going to through this in there.

But for today, what I've done is put together a four-step process to help you start to get more success from whatever tools you have because it's more about process than the actual tool. And I've condensed this down into, you know, the timeframe that we have today. So I want to go really fast, I want to cover things at a high level. Each of these can probably be expanded to be about 10 points each and cover a couple of hours on their own. But I don't want you to get to those text messages in those emails. So I'm gonna go through this and give you some actionable information that you can take away and hopefully start to get better results from that data that you're collecting. ©2022 National Council of State Boards of Nursing, Inc.

And in this case, I mean, you could also, I mean, do a background check, and you can pull PDMP to see if they like to get prescriptions. - For Demerol. - So there would be a lot for us, a lot of different things that we would do before it would get this far. - Yeah, those are good points. None of that's in the record as being the evidence in this case. Who, based on this evidence, would move forward with an OMPE? I'm raising my hand. I think Georgia would move. Yeah, these are the... Yeah, we would move forward with an OMPE. Would anybody else move forward with an OMPE regardless of the discipline case?
